Mahekal Beach Resort, situated on the sun-dappled Riviera Maya in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, was formerly the Shangri-La Caribe, deriving its name from author James Hilton’s vision for utopia. This massive Caribbean resort, which dates to 1982, may not be heaven on earth, but it does have white sand beach, a sea of shaded palapas, and an ocean of palm trees. The thatch-covered guest accommodations lack TVs, radios, and telephones, but each does feature either a terrace or balcony outfitted with a hammock. The sprawling property also promises a pair of outdoor pools, multiple restaurants and bars, and a wide variety of water sports.
Room to Book:
Aventura Ocean and Caribe Ocean bungalows are right on the beach, so they draw the most interest, but also warrant the highest rates.
Insider Tip:
Cyan-Ha (on-site) offers guided trips to several popular dive spots, including shipwrecks, undersea caverns and, of course, the Northern Hemisphere's largest coral reef.
