Plaka

To Perivoli T' Ouranou

19 Lysikratous St.
Athens, Greece
TEL: 30 210 323-5517

This is one of Athens’s oldest venues for rembetika, the “Greek blues,” born out of the misery surrounding the population exchange of the 1920s (when hundreds of thousands of Greek Christians were forcibly resettled here from Turkey), the German occupation, the dictatorship, and other dark times. Shows are, roughly, from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. If you want to be a mangas (cool guy/show-off—the Greek precursor to a gangsta), buy flower heads to throw at the musicians (much safer than plate-breaking!). This club usually closes in August.
