If touring ancient sites all day drives you to drink, bypass the touts luring you into Plaka’s mediocre restaurants and slip into this narrow, 100-year-old hideaway, allegedly the second oldest bar in Europe. Once your eyes adjust to the dark, you’ll make out the giant wine barrels (Brettos has an impressive collection of Greek vintages) and the wall of jewel-colored bottles filled with 28 different liqueurs distilled in-house, in flavors ranging from amaretto to surprisingly subtle rose petal. It’s something of an international, let-me-tell-you-about-my-gap-year scene, but the gregarious owner and staff are native Athenians, with lots of opinions on booze, life, and the pursuit of happiness.
