Located on the Right Bank, the 11th Arrondissement is one of the city's most densely populated neighborhoods. The district's most notable feature is the Place de la Bastille. Now a public square, the site was once home to the Bastille prison which was stormed by Parisians in 1789, marking the beginning of the French Revolution. The neighborhood also contains the Cirque d'Hiver (Winter Circus), a mid-19th-century theater now used as a concert hall, and the Rue du Faubourg St.-Antoine, lined with trendy cafés and shops. To the north, the Oberkampf district is home to popular nightspots like Café Charbon.
Visit the 11th Arrondissement on a Thursday or Sunday morning, when a large open-air market is held in the Place de la Bastille.
