Papeete
Moorea Pearl Resort & Spa
Opened in 2008, Legends Moorea’s 46 villas sometimes feel like a tropical housing development, but they’re actually some of the roomiest private accommodations in French Polynesia. With 1,290 sprawling square feet, the smallest villa is a two-bedroom structure. Whereas many Tahitian resorts are aimed squarely at honeymooners, Legends makes more sense for families or long-stay vacationers who will appreciate the fully equipped modern kitchens. The place can feel isolated and quiet, and you’ll need to rent a car, scooter, or bike to get anywhere off the property. But thriving nature is everywhere you turn—with birds, geckos, and bugs entering your open-air bungalows if you’re not careful to shut them up at night. Interiors are done in tasteful wood and rattan, accented by framed Polynesian art, plus a private Jacuzzi sundeck with chaise lounges will keep you nice and tanned your entire stay.
Room to Book:
When choosing a room, be sure to ask which ones are rooster-free (seriously). The birds start howling as early as 4 a.m., which makes sleeping almost impossible.
Insider Tip:
Be sure to rent a car if you expect to leave the premises. There is nothing within walking distance, and you’ll have to rely on the hotel’s strict shuttle schedule to even get to a beach.
