Palermo
Antica Focacceria San Francesco
An institution in downtown Palermo since 1834, this old school bistro is a top draw for gourmands, who come for the "slow-food" inspired focaccia sandwiches, deep-fried chickpea fritters, and arancini (rice balls stuffed with tomatoes, peas, and mozzarella). The menu’s highlight though is the boiled beef spleen–cheese combo anino con la milza. Once a favorite of mobster Lucky Luciano, the focacceria is now one of the few businesses in Palermo that refuses to pay protection money. The interior is marked by antique wooden cabinets, marble tables, and cast-iron ovens.
Insider Tip:
On Sundays, the focacceria makes an ideal break from shopping the huge flea markets in the nearby Piazza Maria.
