Stedelijk Museum

13 Paulus Potterstraat
Amsterdam, 1071 CX, Netherlands
TEL: 31-20-573-2911

Amsterdam’s museum of contemporary art dates back to 1895 and houses classic and contemporary art, including photography and design objects. Over the years, its collection and mission outgrew the original neo-Renaissance-style brick building. Stedelijk closed in 2008 and underwent renovation and expansion. It reopened in 2012 with a glass-fronted entrance topped with a modern white structure facing the Museumplein, also known as Museum Square. The building contains stone doorways and exhibition halls—including one below ground—with pieces by artists like Piet Mondriaan, Willem de Kooning, and Henri Matisse.

Insider Tip:

Make a day of it by museum-hopping; visit the other three institutions, all within walking distance, along the Museumplein, including the Van Gogh Musuem, the Rijksmuseum, and the Diamond Museum.
