Red Fort

Eastern end of Chandni Chowk
Old Delhi , India

Set at the eastern edge of Shahjahanabad, this sprawling 17th-century fort complex gets its name from the massive red sandstone walls (more than a mile and a half long in total) that circumscribe it. The property, which was completed in 1648 and was the seat of the Moghul empire until 1857, encompasses several elaborately beautiful imperial buildings—including the Diwan-i-Am pavilion, where emperor Shah Jahan held court from a central throne, and the lovely three-domed Moti Masjid, or Pearl Mosque—set amid sweeping green lawns and gardens. A popular sound and light show is held at the fort some evenings.
