On the southeastern tip of the island, the summit of the Makapu’u Lighthouse trail is known as one of the best places to watch the sun rise over the Pacific, especially in the winter, when humpback whales can be spotted just offshore. Expect spectacular views of a huge swatch of the island’s southern coastline, as well. The paved, mile-long trail to the historic lighthouse itself (built in 1909) is a relatively easy hike, and made all the easier in the cooler early morning hours.
