Designated a national house of prayer by Congress, this neogothic Episcopal cathedral is the sixth largest church in the world. Construction began in 1907 during the Teddy Roosevelt administration and was completed in 1990 during the presidency of George H.W. Bush. Damaged during an August 2011 earthquake, the cathedral reopened in November 2011 after renovation. The building boasts 231 stained glass windows and 112 gargoyles, and the church has hosted the funerals of four presidents and the 9/11 memorial service, as well as the final Sunday sermon given by Martin Luther King, Jr.
