NW Washingon
Politics & Prose Bookstore
Washington, DC, 20008, United States
TEL: (800) 722-0790
Priding itself on its well-read staff and inside-the-Beltway speakers, this bookstore dating to 1984 makes its home in a nondescript neighborhood north of the Van Ness metro. Where "all the patrons are above average"—at least according to its founders—Politics and Prose combines impressive on-site inventory with a pleasant downstairs cafe. The event schedule includes regular talks by renowned writers, scholars, and journalists such as Katherine Paterson, Dr. Jonathan Gruber, and Jodi Kantor. The store's extensive biography and history sections are especially muscular, as is its huge selection of children's books (courtesy of a 1999 merger with the Cheshire Cat children's bookstore). The downstairs coffeehouse features art and photography by local artists and offers bistro fare alongside the coffees.
Insider Tip:
Weekend mornings at the downstairs cafe are the busiest time.
