St. Michan’s Church

8 East Church St.
Dublin, Ireland
TEL: 353 1 872-4154

Walking into this somber, dignified Protestant church with its magnificent organ is certainly impressive—but the star attraction here is underneath your feet. After a guide opens a creaking door, revealing a dark stone staircase, you can creep down into the crypt of St. Michan’s, where the passageways are lined with creaking coffins, skulls, and bones. The remains of revolutionary leaders are interred here, but most impressive are the crypt’s famous mummies: four corpses eerily preserved by a combination of constant temperature, low humidity, and methane gas. The oldest was buried 800 years ago and is reputed to have been a Crusader, returned from battle in the Holy Land.
