The Hugh Lane

Also known as the Dublin City Gallery, this delightful and manageable contemporary art gallery is arguably the city’s finest art space. The selection of work by 20th-century Irish artists is strong (including pieces by Sir John Lavery, Jack B. Yeats, Mainie Jellett, and Robert Ballagh); there’s also an excellent collection of Impressionist works by Renoir, Degas, and Monet. The biggest draw here, however, is Francis Bacon’s studio—a chaotic and disheveled space that was painstakingly removed from the artist’s London mews house and reconstructed inside the gallery. It provides an extraordinary glimpse into an obviously troubled but sublimely talented mind.
