Designed with tinted windows and retro red vinyl, this old-school watering hole is located on the first floor of the Royal Street Inn, a self-proclaimed “bed and beverage” in the east end of the French Quarter. The R Bar is adorned with kitschy artifacts, including faux skeletons, a papier-mâché rabbit head, and an antique barber’s chair where a haircut and shot special is available on Mondays. When live DJ’s aren’t spinning soul tunes, the jukebox is playing everything from punk rock to jazz and zydeco. The bar also hosts free seasonal crawfish boils on Fridays.
Insider Tip:
During Saints games, the R Bar has free food and an oversize voodoo doll dressed in the opposing team’s colors, making for a popular and often rowdy event.
