By far the city’s choicest digs—favored by country music stars since 1910—with a stained-glass ceiling, marble columns, and gilded plasterwork. The 122-room property— whose famous guests have included Greta Garbo and Al Capone—celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2010, but a $20 million overhaul in 2003 has kept it up to date. These days, chef Tyler Brown of Capitol Grille plants a vegetable patch, tends beehives, and raises a small herd of heritage breed cattle five miles away. By special arrangement, hotel guests can also volunteer to toil the soil before dining on Brown’s seasonal menu.
