Montego Bay
Yam Centre
W. of Mandville
Manchester, Jamaica
A great place to stop for a roadside snack, the Yam Centre is located west of Mandeville on Route A2. Built atop a small hill, the centre is a collection of 12 tiny food stalls with names like Graney Razor One Stop and Shine Head One Stop (owned by a bald man). The stalls specialize in homegrown yams, a Jamaican staple originally imported from West Africa. Here, the fresh yams are roasted, buttered, and served with grilled saltfish (salt cod).
Insider Tip:
Contrary to tradition, the saltfish is not soaked before it’s grilled, so the fish is still extremely salty; skip that part of the dish if this is an issue.
