Monte Rio
Rio Theater
The Rio Theater, which appears in the form of a gigantic Quonset hut along Sonoma County’s winding Highway 116, has an Art Deco façade and a mural depicting the nearby Pacific, including forest and whales. The theater shows one movie per day from Friday through Sunday, and screens near-first run movies. Don’s Dogs Café, which operates from the deck behind the theater, specializes in hot dogs and sandwiches, including grilled Louisiana hot links, a griddled shrimp burger, and an intimidating “cardiac” burger that combines a hamburger, a sausage patty, and cheese.
Insider Tip:
If the naturalist mural isn’t enough, Rio Theater is just down Bohemian Highway from Sonoma Coast State Beach, which is actually where the trees meet the Pacific.
