Weisman Art Museum
The University of Minnesota's "big, shiny thing" overlooking the Mississippi River, this modern art museum designed by Frank Gehry packs a visual wallop. Occupying a whimsical stainless-steel mega complex completed in 1993, the Weisman Art Museum contains what the New York Times called "the five best rooms for art viewing in the world." Though best known for its 20th-century American artists, most notably Georgia O'Keeffe and Marsden Hartley, the collection also includes ceramics and contemporary art. An expansion completed in the fall of 2011 doubled the teaching museum's gallery size while adding both an on-site cafe and a studio wing.
Pack the Ray Bans if you're planning to visit on a sunny day because the glare off of this super-shiny structure can be hazardous.
