Gallery founder Nina Yashar established Nilufar in 1979 to bring precious ancient carpets to Milan. Gradually the scope widened, and she became one of the world's leading proponents of mid-century as well as modern design objects. The space has a long history of promoting Italian architecture and design masters, such as Gio Ponti and Gaetano Pesce, as well as commissioning collections from more contemporary talents like Martino Gamper. The wildly expensive items on display at the three-story space barely scratch the surface of Yashar's collection, and indeed she has recently opened her former storage space, now known as Nilufar Depot, and made its 3,000 pieces of historic and contemporary design open to the public.
