Mexico City
Fonda el Refugio
Fonda el Refugio serves regional Mexican cuisine for lunch and dinner. Located on a tree-lined street, the bright blue, two-story building has a Spanish-style, white stucco entrance and red tile overhang. The interior is Old World, with brick walls, dark wood furniture, and copper pots hanging above the wood-burning fireplace. The menu reflects culinary traditions from each state in Mexico, and includes pumpkin seed moles, fruit- and seed-flavored aguas (juices), and arroz con plátanos, which pairs rice with fried bananas. The huachinango a la veracruzana, red snapper with tomatoes and olives, is a specialty here.
Insider Tip:
Do some shopping after lunch or before dinner across the street at Mercado Insurgentes. This neighborhood market has more than 200 craft vendors selling everything from ponchos to hand-made silver jewelry.
