This museum was once the home of art patrons John and Sunday Reed, who opened their doors to many of Australia's best-known artists and intellectuals—Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker, Joy Hester, Charles Blackman—and supported their creative endeavors. The original farmhouse was replaced by a modernist "living gallery" designed by David McGlashan in 1964, and those two buildings were joined by a third gallery building, an education center and cafe built after the Reeds died in the early 1980s. Now, visitors explore the sculpture park and kitchen gardens, bring picnics to eat in the sun, and enjoy the exhibitions that take place in the galleries.
