Named after the seaside town in England, Brighton is an upscale bayside suburb in south Melbourne. Its beach, however, is best known for its brightly painted bathing boxes (beach huts), which were built more than a century ago and are now the only ones left in metropolitan Melbourne. Owned solely by local residents, the boxes now change hands, albeit irregularly, for about A$260,000. Along the beach, there's also the historic Brighton Baths, a pier, and a number of cafes.
