A cross between a funky Southeast Asian dive bar and a hip West Village restaurant, Fatty Crab is half bright red walls and mismatched tableware, half exposed brick and minimalist lighting. Up-and-comer chef Zakary Pelaccio styled this venue after restaurants he worked at in Malaysia, and those in the know say the menu is authentic. This is a culinary adventurer’s delight, with such dishes as nasi lemak (a curried chicken and rice dish with vegetables and pineapple) and the watermelon pickle and crispy pork highlighting the flavor contrasts Malay cuisine is known for.
Chili crab is the signature dish, but ask the price before ordering: It changes with the market and can be surprisingly steep.
