After earning international acclaim at the Michelin one-starred Tamarind, chef Atul Kochhar left to open his flagship Indian restaurant Benares, which earned its own star in 2007. Inside, a waterfall flows beside the bar, and the dining room is decorated with dark wood accents and large, red-tinted canvases depicting scenes from India. Far from traditional, Kochhar’s signature dishes include chicken tikka pie with wild berry chutney, and tandoori stone bass with lemon rice, salsify, and pomegranate sauce. Benares also serves creative cocktails like the Masala Sour, made with vodka, homemade masala spices, fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice, and sugar syrup.
Insider Tip:
Most of the two-person tables are closely packed together; request a secluded corner table if you’re looking for a more private experience.
