Martha's Vineyard Travel Guide
There are plenty of things to do in Martha’s Vineyard during the summer, and water sports and activities are at the top of the list. You can rent a boat or kayak and explore the many secluded coves and inlets around the island, or charter a boat for sailing, fishing, or sightseeing. If you’d rather explore on land, both Long Point and Cape Poge Wildlife Refuges have acres of unspoiled nature walks, and Cape Poge allows four-wheel drive vehicles. Most hotels have courtesy bicycles for guests, and you can take in all the natural beauty with a ride around the island. Also, many of the cafes and restaurants offer boxed lunches to-go so you can have a picnic during your excursion.
Take a free wine tasting tour at Chicama Vineyards in Vineyard Haven, and don’t miss the Flying Horses Carousel in Oak Bluffs. If you’re looking for things to do in Martha’s Vineyard when it rains, check out a show at The Vineyard Playhouse or the Capawock Movie House, or step back in time with a tour of Edgartown’s historic houses and buildings. While there’s plenty of things to do in Martha’s Vineyard that’ll keep you busy, don’t forget to hit the beach to relax. Menemsha and South Beach are two of the more popular public beaches where you can sunbathe and swim in the surf.
Walk these 600 acres of windswept dunes, hiking trails, and unspoiled coastline.
Drivers of four-wheel-drive vehicles can get an over-sand vehicle pass to Chappaquiddick’s refuge for a cookout. Or, set aside at least two hours to explore the sanctuary’s flora and fauna on foot. Open year-round, daily, 24 hrs. Gatehouse open May 30–Oct. 15, daily, 9am to 5pm.
Play in the gentle surf, perfect for children (with both lifeguards and nearby restrooms). You won’t witness a better sunset than here, a two-minute walk from the fishing village of the same name. Pack a picnic and a blanket—it gets cold at dusk.
In the village of Oak Bluffs, check out the Flying Horses Carousel, and 1876 amusement that retains its original glass eyes and horsehair trimmings.
