Sugar Sweet Sunshine
Sugar Sweet Sunshine: the name sounds like the title of a 70’s pop song, and this Lower East Side bakery has a vibe to match. Established by self-taught bakers Debbie Weiner and Peggy Williams, the unpretentious shop is designed with kitschy flowered wallpaper and mismatched retro furniture. The bakery specializes in cupcakes, available in flavors like Sunshine (yellow cake with vanilla buttercream) and Ooey Gooey (chocolate cake with chocolate almond buttercream). Icing and sprinkles are applied in an intentionally imprecise manner, emphasizing flavor over appearance. In addition to cupcakes, the shop sells banana pudding, cookies, cakes, and pies.
If you can’t find a seat in the small bakery, walk to nearby Hamilton Fish Park and enjoy them picnic-style.
