Though F.A.O. Schwarz came to Manhattan in 1870 (making it the oldest toy store in the city), the famous Midtown East location on Fifth Ave. didn’t open until 1986. Since then, the store has become a legend throughout the world, and many travel just to walk through the doors guarded by the real toy soldiers. Once inside, customers find everything from huge stuffed animals to a create-your-own-Barbie department. Don’t miss the renowned giant piano, where patrons can wait in line for a chance to dance across the keys.
The store can become overwhelmingly crowded on weekends, so if possible, go by on a weekday.
