On the north side of Green Mountain National Forest, the Equinox Resort complex comprises of five buildings spanning more than 200 years, including the home of Abraham Lincoln’s granddaughter, for a total of 195 rooms. In general, rooms reflect the 19th-century aesthetic with canopied beds, dark wood furniture, and mounted porcelain. The resort's main draw is the extracurricular activities like falconry, fly fishing, off-road Land Rover driving, archery, and one of the top 75 golf courses in the country according to Golf Digest. For meals, there are five on-site restaurants, including the Marsh Tavern, which predates the Revolutionary War.

Historical quaintness can also mean smaller rooms, lower ceilings, and slanting walls. If space is important, ask for a room in the main building or townhouse.

Don’t forget a good pair of hiking shoes as a number of well-maintained trails snake up the adjacent Equinox Mountain.
