In the 1990’s a French tycoon came to the island nation of Madagascar looking for a high-end place to stay, but couldn’t find one, so he flew up the coast along the Mozambique Channel and discovered the perfect spot to build his own retreat. The 25 rosewood villas are scattered along a peninsula so remote that the resort was able to declare its own time zone—an hour ahead of the rest of the country—to capitalize on the luminous daylight. Two-story guest quarters have breakfast nooks, sitting rooms, and terraces with sea-facing hammocks. Afternoon tea is served on a large grassy knoll. Not to miss: an excursion to the tsingy, ancient limestone outcroppings jutting out of Moromba Bay.
