In the 1990’s a French tycoon came to the island nation of Madagascar looking for a high-end place to stay, but couldn’t find one, so he flew up the coast along the Mozambique Channel and discovered the perfect spot to build his own retreat.

Tiny Nosy Komba has no roads, and therefore no cars; guests arrive from Nosy Be, the nearest island, a 25-minute boat ride away.

Isalo National Park, in central Madagascar, is a moonscape of towering sandstone outcroppings, narrow canyons, and lush forest. Relais de la Reine, a collection of low-slung granite cottages, blends almost seamlessly into the surrounding area.
