Lower East Side
Russ & Daughters
Since 1914, four different generations of the Russ family have owned this gourmet shop on Houston Street in the Lower East Side. Because Jewish dietary laws prohibit the joint sale of meat and dairy, "appetizing" shops like Russ & Daughters opened to sell fish and dairy while "delicatessens" sold cured and pickled meats. Today, the shop’s red and green neon sign is the gateway to an array of cases, shelves, and jars filled with smoked salmon, herring, cream cheese bagels, sweets, and a dozen kinds of caviar. Martha Stewart is a long-time customer of this authentic establishment.
Take your bagel, lox, and cream cheese creation to go and enjoy it in the nearby Peretz Square public park.
