Lower East Side
Pickle love shines at this Lower East Side destination at the corner of Essex and Grand. Proprietor Alan Kaufman devotes nine hours a day to producing remarkably fresh and snap-perfect pickles, from hot to sweet and new to fully soured. Everything is subject to pickling: Carrot, pineapple, and garlic are just a few of the non-cucumber options. Skimpy on ambiance—the place is tiny and crammed with red barrels full of pickled goods—this store keeps its emphasis on the product, including its sincere commitment to kosher law. Any pickle can be sampled for free, and then mixed and matched with other favorites in popular quart containers.
This portion of the Lower East Side is known as the Old Pickle District, and has seen more than 200 pickle stores come and go since pickling boomed in the early 1900's.
