One of the best indie-rock music venues to emerge this millennium, Pianos opened quietly in 2002 in a former piano store—the club’s current owners didn’t bother to remove the sign—and since then has become an emerging band’s dream gig, thanks to the intimate setting and über-cool nabe. Cover for nightly shows on the main stage (which has been graced by The Rapture and Franz Ferdinand, among others) at the rear of the first floor usually runs $8–$10; lesser-known or experimental acts, as well as DJ’s, play gratis in the upstairs lounge. Pianos is where music, media, and celebrity types with expensive highlights come to slum.
Insider Tip:
Since patrons are strictly skinny-jean-wearing, blunt-bobbed, twenty-something types, dress down-but-up and order an unfussy beer to fit in.
