Louisville’s 21c ranks as a bona fide cultural institution in the making, not just a hotel with art. Designed by New York architect Deborah Berke—and owned by philanthropist Steve Wilson and his wife, Laura Lee Brown—the 90-room property showcases an impressive, rotating collection of paintings, sculptures, photos, and video installations by living artists (hence the hotel’s name, a reference to the 21st century). Occupying five 19th-century brick buildings, 21c showcases Berke’s spare-but-polished industrial style, with exposed-brick walls.

Room to Book:

For a $40 upcharge, opt for Luxury Rooms, which have a city view and face north and east.

Insider Tip:

Pick up a map at the Louisville Visitors Center a few blocks away and head out on the Urban Bourbon Trail to taste more than 50 bourbons. The trail stops at 21c’s own bar Proof on Main.
