Home to one of the largest populations of Persian-Americans in the US, Tehrangeles – a neighborhood nickname combining Los Angeles with Iran’s capital Tehran – is a thriving community of Persian expatriates exiled during the 1979 Islamic revolution. A few blocks south of UCLA, the neighborhood is now a hub of Persian culture, where conversations in Farsi fill local cafes, and the largest Persian bookstore outside of Iran holds an astonishing collection. There are also plenty of local synagogues, vibrant markets, and authentic restaurants, especially the perennially popular Shamshiri Grill known for its kabobs and shawarma.
