El Borrego de Oro #2

2808 E. Washington Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA, 90023, United States
TEL: (323) 780-1132

The second of three branches, this traditional Mexican eatery opened in 2003 and is located on East Washington Boulevard in southeast LA. The interior is simple and largely unadorned, save for a few hanging plants and festive streamers, although wall-to-wall windows and occasional mariachi brighten the atmosphere. Meaning “The Golden Lamb,” El Borrego de Oro specializes in traditional barbacoa: barbecued lamb slow-cooked in an underground pit covered with maguey leaves. The entire process takes around eight hours, and the result is tender, smoke-tinged meat served with flavorful consome, or broth, as well as onions, cilantro, salsa, and thick homemade tortillas.

Insider Tip:

Cut the heat of the salsa roja with a glass of homemade horchata, or rice water; because it’s made in-house, it has a fresh, natural taste.
