Double Decker Bus

Now synonymous with the city of London, the iconic red Routemaster double decker buses served as one of the city’s primary forms of public transportation for nearly 50 years. However, because of difficulties accommodating disabled passengers, the buses were phased out in 2005. The Transport for London organization does maintain the classic Routemaster on its two heritage routes—No. 9 and No. 15. Although the heritage routes are not accompanied by guided tours, travelers still pass some of London’s best-known attractions, including Trafalgar Square, Tower Hill, and Royal Albert Hall.

Insider Tip:

The new red buses are low-floor vehicles, meaning they lower to street level when they come to a stop. Because of their design, the Routemasters are unable to do this.
