Os Ferreiras
Lisbon, 1150, Portugal
Os Ferreiras, in the city's center, is a fado mainstay, owned by singers Antonio and Maria Helena Ferreira (fado is a genre of Portuguese music). A rotating roster of fadistas, including Artur Batalha and Julia Lopes, perform every Friday and Saturday night after 10 p.m. (reservations are required). Here one might witness a desgarrada: a singing "duel" with ever increasingly difficult melodies and lyrics. The main room boats photographs of singers, embroidered shawls, arched doorways, and blue tiled walls. The Portuguese cuisine includes signature dishes such as char-grilled sea bass and grouper and Beiras sausages.
Insider Tip:
Keep an eye out for the famous fadista Mariza, who still frequents the restaurant.
