The city is in the midst of a post-recession hotel boom—at least 40 new Lisbon hotels will have opened by the end of 2017. The most storied neighborhoods to bed down in are Alfama and Bairro Alto, though both can be noisy at night. While it's difficult to compete with the epic luxury of opulent historic hotels like the Pestana Palace Lisboa, it's the city's new boutique offerings, which often marry modern amenities with historic structures, that are stealing headlines of late. The best new hotels in Lisbon include Santiago de Alfama, the Valverde Hotel along Avenida da Liberdade, and the Memmo Príncipe Real in the alt-hipster enclave of Príncipe Real.
