Belém Cultural Center
Located next to the Jeronimos Monastery, the Belém Cultural Center (Fundação Centro Cultural de Belém, or CCB, to natives) comprises five main areas: the Conference, Performing Arts, and Exhibition Centers and the Educational and Formation Areas. Built in 1992, the formidable and minimalist cubic masonry of light gray stone is tempered by large glass panels and interconnected by paved "streets". The Performing Arts Center consists of two auditoriums, which host shows from diverse genres such as opera, jazz, dance, and classical; recent shows include Marc Copland and Rodrigo Leao. Four galleries make up the Exhibition Center, where pieces of contemporary art and photography are displayed.
Insider Tip:
Stay at the nearby Jeronimos 8 hotel, built in the 1940s but featuring sleek, modern decor.
