Surquillo Mercado #1
Head to Surquillo #1, one of the most authentic produce markets in the city, for a slice of daily life in Lima. Housewives and chefs rub shoulders here, hunting down the freshest ingredients for that day’s family lunch or tasting menu. This market is where you can really take in the huge array of vegetables available locally—Peru grows more than 3,000 types of potato, for example—as well as fruits and raw meats. While it might be tricky to smuggle tropical fruit or a bag of fresh ají amarillo chiles back home, at least you can snap a photo or take home a bottle of hot sauce as a happy reminder.
