This art and history museum is taking over Athens, with a large modern art and architecture annex on Pireos Street near Gazi; a complex of Neoclassical mansions near Kerameikos Cemetery housing a world-class collection of Islamic art (as well as part of the ancient city walls of Athens); the Kouloura Mansion’s toy and game collection in Palaio Faliro; and several studios and homes of famous Greek artists and writers throughout the metropolis. But the nerve center is still the flagship Benaki, part of Museum Row on Vassilias Sophias (near the Cycladic, Byzantine, and War museums). This mansion contains perhaps the world’s best collection of Greek folk art and costumes, and its rooftop café overlooking the Parliament Building and the National Gardens is the perfect spot for a casual lunch.
The chicest souvenirs in Athens are sold at the Benaki gift store: replicas of jewelry, fabrics, furniture, and toys from the museum’s collection are joined by new commissioned works by Athenian jewelers including Elena Votsi.
