London, England, SW1X 8JT, United Kingdom
Run by the same owners as Chutney Mary and Verraswamy, the United Kingdom's oldest Indian restaurant, Amaya, has earned one Michelin star for its grilled kebabs and Indian-style tapas. From the rosewood-paneled dining room, diners watch chefs in the open kitchen cook with a hot-clay tandoor oven, over coal flames, or on an iron griddle. Straying from the usual Indian curries, the dishes range from marinated venison to chutney-glazed asparagus and jack-fruit biryani (a rice dish). Many sharing plates are finger-food, and all come with sides of fruit chutneys and toppings (including one made of ground rose petals).
Insider Tip:
While the Indian tapas at Amaya are ideal for sharing with a group, there's a communal table catering to solo diners and those without reservations.
