Kilauea Lodge
Volcano Village, Big Island, HI, 96785, United States
A recipient of the 2009 Hale Aina Award from Honolulu Magazine, Kilauea Lodge in Volcano lies only a mile from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. In 1986, Lorna and Albert Jayte (once a makeup artist for Magnum, P.I.) transformed what had been a YMCA camp when they fell in love with it on their honeymoon. The lodge’s restaurant houses the Fireplace of Friendship, built in 1938 using stones and coins from 32 nations. The 12 rooms and two vacation houses feature stained-glass windows and Volcano art. Activities include trips to the national park to view Kilauea Volcano and native birds.
Room to Book:
If you’re a light sleeper or like it quiet, ask for a room away from the public hot tub or consider one of the off-site cottages.
Insider Tip:
For downtime at the lodge after sightseeing, there are lawn games for kids and adults.
