Considered one of the most iconic images in Maine, the Cape Neddick Lighthouse (widely known as the Nubble Lighthouse) sits on a rocky outcropping about 100 yards off Long Sands Beach. Originally built in 1879, the white tower rises 41 feet over the Atlantic, next to the keeper’s house with its distinctive red roof. Because of its potentially dangerous location, the lighthouse is not open to the public but can be seen clearly from Sohier Park, which has a telescope and Nubble-themed gift shop. In December, the lighthouse and keeper’s house are illuminated with holiday lights, drawing crowds of spectators.
