Nanbu Courtyard Cafe
Kapaau, Big Island,
This Big Island coffeehouse and café is situated along Akoni Pule Highway, near Keawaeli Bay. The canary yellow eatery has an outdoor patio and wood floors in a building that dates to 1898; it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as it once housed the Nanbu Hotel, which served as a community social hub in the early 1900's. In addition to coffee and espresso drinks, blackboard menus list breakfast options such as bagels with lox, and for lunch, grilled ciabatta sandwiches and burgers, salads such as curried quinoa, and seasonal soups like potato leek. A display case near the register holds house-made pastries, including the Nanbu specialty, an over-sized cinnamon roll.
