Things to do in Java

With an action-packed capital city (including a wealth of malls) and active volcanoes bubbling on a daily basis, there is no shortage of exciting things to do in Java. (Don't worry too much about the volcanoes, though—their small eruptions are usually more bark than bite.) To dig deeper into the historic side of what to do in Java, be sure to spend some time in the Java city of Yogyakarta.

Sunbathe. Java beaches are plentiful, and beautiful—but it's safe to assume you may not have quiet stretches of sand to yourself.  Top spots include Pangandaran and Batu Karas, both known for their good surfing.

Temples. To step into the island's spiritual history, one of the top things to do in Java includes visiting the Hindu and Buddhist temples, such as the Borobudur and almost baroque-looking Prambanan complexes. One quirky standout: Candi Sukuh, which is thought to have been built before the era of Hinduism, since its artwork point to its being part of a cult that worshiped fertility.

Palaces. Adorned with jewels, gold, and flowers Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat and Kraton Kasepuhan are gleaming examples of the Sultan style of centuries past.
