A pious, conservative district populated mostly by migrants from Anatolia (like Wasilla, but warmer), Üsküdar is positively hopping in the evenings; on summer nights, the boardwalk here is an Islamic Coney Island. Go by ferry—take it from Eminönü—and have a wander along the quay; shoot bobbing balloons with a popgun; try the cotton candy; have your fortune told by the guy with the magic bunny rabbit; sit on the cushions along the waterfront, and have yourself a darned good Anatolian time. Someone will be playing a guitar or a saz, and everyone around him will know all the words to the song. You won’t find cocktails here—but you can get a beer or raki in most of the simple (usually excellent) fish restaurants around the fish market.
