A National Historical Landmark, ‘Iolani Palace is the official residence of Hawaii’s monarchy. Built by King Kalakaua in 1882, the fortress was home to both Kalakaua and his sister Queen Lili’uokalani. Originally named Hale Ali’i, meaning “House of the Chief,” King Kamehameha V renamed the palace ‘Iolani in tribute to his deceased brother. The Italianate building includes the Grand Hall, with its Hawaiian wood staircase and portraits of the royals; the red and gold Throne Room; and the private residences. Palace tours are available, and basement galleries are open for self-guided tours.
