Every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., this flea market in the parking lot of Fairfax High School bustles with eccentric antique collectors, talented acrylic painters, distracted furniture restorers, bearded hippie leatherworkers, and oversize-sunglass-wearing vintage designers—along with the pint-size actresses, fashion-forward shop owners, and beach bums who arrive to scope out the vendors and their piles of goodies. Among the trinkets and toys we discovered there recently: vintage silk scarves ($5 each), a house portrait of a Melrose bungalow ($2), and a 1970’s kelly-green Chanel bag ($40).

Free parking is available in the parking lot south of Melrose, or on Fairfax at the meters (metered spots are free on Sundays).
